\nThe Socialist Group in the European Parliament today expressed its deep concern over language used by the leader of the main opposition party in Bulgaria, GERB, a member of the European People’s Party.

My name is Boyan Yurukov, a Bulgarian blogger who follows closely the media storm around the so called „scandal“ regarding Boyko Borisov’s statement in Chicago. I am sure that you haven’t read the transcripts from the tape that was published less than two days ago, because otherwise you would not be so quick to judge. Nothing in his speech has anything to do with the widely spread rumors of him talking about „bad human material“.

Thus the new party GERB must activate the young and ambitious Bulgarians in order to change something in the country. There were no rasist or discriminative statements in his talk. The only mention of „material“ was in the sense of a fresh message and new people with good education and ideas, who are needed for the future. He points out that many smart and young people have left the country, while they are needed home to take their important role in fixing the state of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am writing you as a blogger, who closely tracks the European Parliament and its statements. I met Tony Robinson during the blogger event organized by EJC 10 days ago, which aimed at making the EU politics more popular. He ensured me that PSE is open to discussion with the bloggers of EU and so I am taking up on this statement. I don’t think that such quick and uninformed statements are in the best interest of PSE and the EP as a whole.<\/p>\n

If these reports are accurate, Mr Wiersma considers them to be unacceptable and disdainful towards millions of Bulgarians. He does not consider that the reports provide any basis for a positive interpretation of the remarks. His view is also that these remarks do not help the country and that they damage Bulgaria’s image abroad.<\/p>\n

In his public statement, he says „.. we ask the EPP to take appropriate measures or to distance itself from a party that has already crossed the invisible line between right wing populism and extremism.“ Since Mr. Wiersma is a Vice-president of the party you represent, many would consider his words to be a reflection of its position.

\nThe PES and the EPP have signed this charter, which requires EU

\nas those related to race, ethnic and national origin and religion.<\/p>\n

It would be appropriate for a party such as the EPP to take action if
\none of its members is apparently in breach of the charter. I see Mr
\nWiersma’s comments in that light and I am sure you will too.<\/p>\n

Speaking personally, I think you would be wrong to assume that Mr
\nWiersma questions the accuracy of the reports he has read. There is no
\nevidence that I am aware of that the reports are inaccurate and I am not
\naware of Mr Borisov denying the reports or seeking to clarify them. I
\nshare Mr Wiersma’s view that, presuming the reports to be accurate, they
\ndo not provide any basis for a positive interpretation of Mr Borisov’s
\nremarks.<\/p>\n
